Athlete Spotlight: Brandi Hett

If you spend any amount of time around Brandi Hett, you’ll get a sense of her authenticity and kindheartedness. Brandi is a wife, mama, lawyer, and AMRAP extraordinaire. She’s also one of the longest standing members of CrossFit Columbus. Just a few months after it’s opening, Brandi joined CrossFit Inception and began to cultivate the community that many of us experience within the box today. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate the vibrant community we’re a part of than by getting to know one of our most loyal and consistent members a little bit better!

How did you get started in CrossFit?

“My husband, Capp, encouraged me to check out CrossFit. I was going to another mainstream gym in the area, but I found myself in a slump. Capp suggested I check out one of the free WODs Inception offers on Saturdays. Almost immediately, I was hooked and I’ve been coming ever since July 2010. I had exercised consistently for most of my life, but I had very little experience with some of the movements involved in CrossFit WODs. Chris worked with me one-on-one between classes to make sure I developed proper movement patterns as I was executing the lifts. Both Chris and Mark have always been really involved in my personal growth as well as in the growth of the box. I’m really grateful for that.”

What are the top 3 things in your gym bag?

Adorable side note: Capp is actually Brandi’s gear junkie, so credit to him for the top notch product choices!

What’s the greatest challenge you experience doing CrossFit?

“When the workout goes up on the blog I text my sister-in-law, Jennie, about what’s coming at us at 5:30 the next morning. Some of the WODs intimidate me! I try to go regardless, but there are certain movements that are really challenging. When I see 150 wall balls on a WOD, I’m thinking, ‘No way!’ but I love it when I see clean and jerks, an AMRAP, or anything involving cardio.”

What is your most memorable PR?

“Every time I finish a WOD is a victory! But really, achieving the goal of double unders was really exciting. I also competed in Rumble by the River with Jennie (pictured above). That provided me with an opportunity to overcome some fears, especially when we had to get on the water for one of the events. It was another memorable CrossFitting moment!”

Do you have a favorite quote or a motto that you try and live by?

“I love quotes and Bible verses. It’s hard for me to pick just one! ‘What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us,’ is an old, but faithful quote that I try to live by.”
